Probably the most well-known collection of chorale preludes, this edition owes the title Orgelbüchlein to J S Bach's application for the post of Cantor at St. Thomas in Leipzig in 1723. The Orgelbüchlein is a collection of chorale preludes which originally had been intended to include164 pieces, the misleading mention that they were pieces for the 'beginning organist'. In fact, the 44 completed compositions of the Orgelbüchlein are demanding masterpieces which impressively show the whole spectrum of the so-called short choral prelude.
